Feature configuration

Things to know

  • It helps to understand the terminology:

    • Hardware brands like BBPOS and ID TECH are often configured to use Total System Services (TSYS) as their backend payment processor. In these setups, Network Merchants Inc. (NMI) is the gateway that sends transaction data to TSYS.

    • Adyen is a full-stack provider. They operate their own gateway, payment processor, and acquiring bank on a single platform.

  • The following credit card readers are compatible with the Field Mobile App:

    • Adyen NYC1

    • BBPOS Chipper™ 2X BT - TSYS

    • BBPOS Chipper™ 3X BT - TSYS

    • ID TECH VP3350 - TSYS

  • The following is required to pair and use an Adyen card reader with the Field Mobile App:

    • iPhone XS or newer and iOS 17.4 or newer.

    • Android 12 or newer.

Note: For more, see Adyen's system requirements here and ServiceTitan's system requirements here.

  • On iOS devices, if a BBPOS or ID TECH card reader is paired through iOS device settings, it shows as connected but does not function with the Field Mobile App. If the reader is already paired, unpair it and tap Forget this Device. It must be paired through the Field Mobile App, not iOS device settings.

  • If you previously paired a card reader, it automatically reconnects if it's the only reader in range. To connect to the correct card reader, check the serial number on the back.

  • After an ID TECH card reader is turned on, it remains in a standby mode for 15 minutes. After the initial setup is complete, reconnecting an ID TECH card reader takes 15 seconds or less to process a payment.

Best practices

  • After downloading the Field Mobile App, select Allow for bluetooth permission so you can pair and use card readers. Permission request for Bluetooth device access in ServiceTitan Field app interface.

  • Before pairing, ensure you're on the latest version of the Field Mobile App and your mobile device's operating system.

  • When pairing a card reader for the first time and tapping Pay > Continue, the system initiates a configuration sequence that may last up to five minutes. To account for this delay, we recommend you do this before taking it out on a job.

  • If you're having trouble connecting an ID TECH card reader to the Field Mobile App, use a paperclip to press and release the Reset button at the bottom of the reader, next to the USB port, to perform a hard restart. The reader will make a beep sound to confirm it has been reset.

Step 1: Prepare your card reader for the Field Mobile App

  1. Update the Field Mobile App.

  2. Remove the card reader from its packaging.

  3. Charge the card reader with the included cable.

  4. Turn on the card reader.

Note: On BBPOS card readers, the LED light cycles through each color as it starts up. After a few seconds, a blue light begins flashing, which means that the reader is working correctly and searching for an available Bluetooth connection.
