Things to know

  • The monthly cost consists of the usage surcharge fees that AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular mobile network operators have begun charging businesses for text messaging.
  •
  • A conservative estimate of the usage portion of the cost is $5 per 1,000 text messages. The fixed portion of the cost is $10 per month, which is what the Campaign Registry (TCR) receives to manage this service.
  •
  • The estimate is an easy way to quickly estimate the costs. The estimate could be too low if most of the messages are SMS, in comparison to MMS, and they are multi-segment messages.

Note: An SMS message is broken up into 160-character segments; whereas, MMS is more expensive but is one segment regardless of size. Mobile network operators charge by the segment, not the message. Adding emojis to your SMS changes the segmentation limit from 160 characters to 70 characters.

Estimate your monthly text messaging cost

To check your monthly fee:

  1. Go to the top toolbar and click Search .
  2.
  3. Click the Search dropdown and select SMS.
  4.
  5. Use the From and To fields at the bottom of the filters to select a date range for an entire month.
  6.
  7. Click Search to see your results. The total number of items in your search is the number of text messages sent for the month.
  8.
  9. Take the total number of messages and multiply by the applicable carrier surcharge fee per message. Add any additional fees, such as the TCR monthly fee, to this total. For example, 2500 * $0.05 + $10 = $22.50.

Note: During peak seasons, the number of text messages you send may increase. Additionally, carrier surcharge fees and TCR fees are subject to change. It's recommended to regularly review the carrier's fee structure to obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information.
