Can’t use the Bluetooth BBPOS / EMV swipers on my deviceLast updated on 05/26/2022

This article helps troubleshoot when users want to use the EMV swipers on their iOS and Android devices.

Problem

Users can’t use the EMV swiper on iOS and Android devices. This occurs because the user’s mobile device settings and EMV swiper settings are not configured correctly.

Solution

To facilitate payment options for you and customers in the field, use EMV swipers with ServiceTitan payments via ServiceTitan Mobile. EMV swipers increase security with the latest in chip-card encryption and give a user a chance to dispute chargeback charges.

ServiceTitan Mobile is compatible with two EMV swipers (We currently only supply BBPOS readers):

  • Miura M010

  • BBPOS Chipper 2X BT

There are solutions based on the issues encountered. Be sure to complete all to troubleshoot the problem:

Check Miura M010 swiper

Miura M010 swiper is available for iOS and Android devices. It is available only if you use ServiceTitan payments in the United States. If you have issues with account setup, contact paymentsupport@servicetitan.com.

  1. Once your account is configured, pair the Miura M010 with your mobile device using a Bluetooth connection.  Note: When using an EMV swiper, we recommend you to use the chip-card reader for all your credit card transactions to increase payment success and overall usability.

  2. Turn on the Bluetooth capability on your mobile device and get the Miura M010 ready to connect your mobile device with the Miura M010.  Note: For instructions on how to pair a Bluetooth device on your device, visit Apple support or Android support

To pair your mobile device with the Miura M010:

  1. On the Miura M010, press the Blue Power button to turn it ON. The front screen lights up. Note: To pair your mobile device, the Miura M010 should be ON. If you don’t see the MIURA SYSTEMS logo displayed on the screen after pressing the power button, your device may be out of battery. Connect it to a power source and try again.

  2. Hold down the Bluetooth button at the top corner on the face of the Miura M010.

  3. You can also hold down the Green checkmark on the lower right corner.

In six seconds, a blue light and Bluetooth symbol start flashing. This means that the MIURA device is in pairing mode and you should see it appear in the list of available devices on your tablet’s Bluetooth screen. Note: If there are multiple MIURA devices listed, look at the back of the Miura M010 to find the serial number. The last three digits of the number on the device you are trying to pair should match the device listed. For example, if you have a device with a serial number that has 638 as the last three digits, you should see that on the list.

  4. Tap Miura. A pop-up window opens.

  5. To pair your device, tap Pair.

  6. Tap the Green checkmark on the swiper.

Once it’s done pairing, you will see a checkmark on the Miura M010.

The Miura M010 starts checking security and configuring with ServiceTitan and ServiceTitan Mobile.

Once it’s connected, start using the Miura M010 to take credit card payments in ServiceTitan Mobile.

To process payment with the Miura M010 in ServiceTitan Mobile:

  1. Turn on your EMV swipe.

  2. In the Pay screen, choose any payment type that is a credit card.

  3. Enter the amount.

  4. Tap Use Swiper.

  5. When the pop-up appears, click EMV.

  6. Review the payment details, including amount and payment type.

  7. Select Remember this card.

  8. Tap Continue

  9. Follow the instructions on the screen. Be sure to use the chip reader if the card has a chip: Turn on the Miura M010 and Bluetooth capability on your mobile device. The swiper starts initializing to prepare for the transaction. Note: If you have difficulties in turning on the swiper, see the Pair a mobile device with an EMV swiper section.

  10. Insert the card into the chip reader. The Miura M010 asks you to confirm the purchase amount.

  11. Tap the Green checkmark.

  12. Once the Miura M010 shows the transaction is approved, remove the card. The confirmed amount appears on the screen in ServiceTitan Mobile. If there’s a balance, it shows that too.

  13. When the payment confirmation is complete, the Credit Card Payment Authorization screen automatically appears. Note: The whole process can take up to five seconds.

  14. Ask the customer to read the terms and sign.

  15. Once you have a signature, click Accept. The screen shows that the payment was approved.

  16. Tap Done to return to the job.

Check BBPOS Chipper 2X BT

The following steps should be taken for the initial setup and pairing of the BBPOS reader to an iOS tablet:

  • Have the most recent iOS version installed.

  • Bluetooth is turned ON, but the BBPOS reader itself should not be paired within the Bluetooth settings.

  • If the device is already paired, have the Technicians un-pair and forget the device.

  • Ensure that the tablet's sleep mode/screen saver mode is turned off for the first pairing attempt.

  • You can access this option within the tablet settings under "Display & Brightness”.  "Auth-Lock" should be set to “Never”).

  • Scroll down the iOS device settings until you come across a list of all downloaded applications and from there select "ServiceTitan Mobile".  This will present a list of toggles associated with permissions within the application itself.  From here, ensure that "Bluetooth" is toggled ON.

  • Leave the tablet settings and access the ServiceTitan Mobile application.

  • Download the Pricebook.

  • Before attempting a payment, the Technician needs to be both dispatched and Arrived at the job.

  • Before clicking "Use Swiper", please ensure that the reader is powered on first (and the power button light is flashing blue).

  • If the readers do not immediately connect after selecting Use Swiper and continuing to the pairing screen, this would be due to a Firmware update pushed to the device by the provider. This update needs to be fully installed into the device before it will allow the reader to successfully pair to the application.

  • The method of installing the Firmware update is the same as processing a Credit Card payment. When starting the payment, please ensure that you turn on the BBPOS reader before selecting "Use Swiper".  When you select the "Use Swiper" option on the mobile application and the tablet shows that it is trying to connect, please simply let the reader and tablet sit without canceling the payment or the application on the tablet while this tries to communicate.

  • After a few minutes, you may be presented with an error message stating that the reader is already in use by another operation (please note that this process can take 10 - 15 minutes). Please continue to allow the reader time to sit during this operation so that it can begin the download (do not cancel the payment due to the error).

  • 4 lights should appear and flash on the top of the BBPOS reader after about 15 minutes.  When these lights finish flashing, this would indicate that the reader has successfully downloaded the update.  From this point, you can cancel the payment and then select "Use Swiper" again.

  • Once the above steps have been completed, the reader should now be able to connect to the tablet for processing.  If you are able to pair successfully at this point, please feel free to set your "Auto-Lock" settings back as they were before switching to Never to prevent a faster battery drain on the tablet.

To ensure BBPOS Chipper 2XBT functions well, do the following:

  1. Update to the latest version of the ServiceTitan Mobile for Apple iOS or Android before using the BBPOS Chipper 2X BT.

  2. Apple iOS and Android devices are paired differently: Android devices are paired through the device’s Settings menu. Apple iOS devices are paired using ServiceTitan Mobile settings, not the iOS settings.

  3. The first time you connect your mobile device to the BBPOS Chipper 2X BT by tapping Use Swiper, it undergoes a configuration sequence. This sequence can take up to 10 - 15 minutes. To account for this delay, you should connect your mobile device to the swiper before taking the swiper out on a job.

  4. To increase payment success and overall usability, use the chip-card reader on the BBPOS Chipper 2X BT for all your credit card transactions. Try the magnetic swiper only after the chip reader has failed three times.

  5. If you have previously paired a BBPOS Chipper 2X BT to your mobile device, it automatically reconnects if it’s the only swiper in range.

  6. You can find the serial number of the BBPOS Chipper 2X BT on the back of the device in the bottom-left corner. You need the serial number to know which device to connect to. Note: It is recommended to write an identification label with the device’s serial number and attach it directly to the device, since the serial number is small.

  7. Turn on the BBPOS Chipper 2X BT by tapping the power button once. To turn it off, hold down the power button for five seconds.

Turn on BBPOS Chipper 2X BT status lights, and the status light next to the power button will show the device’s current status:

  • Flashing blue every second—The swiper is on and ready to connect to another device.

  • Multicolored flashing—The swiper has been discovered using Bluetooth Proximity and is ready to connect.

  • Steady blue—The swiper is connected to another device.

  • Flashing blue every five seconds—The swiper is in standby mode. If inactive for more than 30 seconds, the swiper enters standby mode to conserve power.

  • Alternating red and magenta—The swiper is charging.

  • Flashing red—The swiper’s battery is low.

  • Rapidly flashing blue and orange—The swiper completed installing a software update. If the swiper is unresponsive, reset it by turning it off and then on.
