# Use location naming conventions for production homebuilding

## Overview

Use efficient naming conventions with your Location Records to enable strategic and dynamic searchability and reporting in your account.

---

###

#### Who uses this feature

- Administrators, accountants, estimators, project managers, and operations managers
- Applies to Construction business types
- Applies to all trades

## Things to know

- Filtering location records in search and reporting is easier with coherent naming conventions.
- Using naming conventions reduces the need to add custom fields to your location and Customer Records, increasing office efficiency and saving time.
- Before you can use these naming conventions, you need to create new service locations. See [Add a new service location in ServiceTitan](/v1/docs/create-a-new-location-record) for more information on adding new location records.

## Use naming conventions for production homebuilding records

Due to the overall scope of work in production homebuilding, managing location records is crucial to ensuring a high-level customer experience across all individuals who interact with your business, such as residential homeowners, project managers, builders, and others.

By adopting a strategic naming convention, you can create efficiency and better searchability within your location records for each person who interacts with your account.

- **Suggested approach**: BUILDER, MAILING ADDRESS, (LOT #), COMMUNITY
- **Examples**:
  - DR Horton 123 Main Street (10) Celebration
  - Lennar 345 Second Street (1) Ascent

Using these naming conventions can make it easier to find answers to common questions on the search page, such as:

1. How many homes have we built for [Builder Name]?
2. How can I search for the homes in [Community]?
3. How can I search for a specific [Lot Number]?

See [Move a construction-built home to a residential homeowner](/v1/docs/move-a-construction-built-home-to-a-residential-homeowner) or [Move a construction build to a commercial business owner](/v1/docs/move-a-construction-build-to-a-commercial-business-owner) for more information on adding new records into your system when you don't yet have the official address.

## Report use cases

By adopting the suggested naming conventions, you can uncover value in the *Reporting* tab in the same way you can from the search page. With the *Contains* filter, you can efficiently identify location records.

> [!NOTE]
> **Note:** If you instead [use custom fields](/v1/docs/use-custom-fields), they can also be used in reporting and on the search page.
