# Use generic materials to record miscellaneous costs

## Overview

Using the Pricebook, you can track costs on physical materials like capacitors and filters. You can also create an entry for a generic material in the pricebook that doesn't reflect an actual, physical thing. This entry would serve as a placeholder that you can later use to account for miscellaneous costs, including:

- Items not currently in the pricebook, such as permits
- Labor costs performed by non-managed technicians, such as subcontractors. (For more information, see [Generate actuals from labor](/v1/docs/generate-actuals#generate-actuals-from-labor).)
- Unexpected costs generated while on the field
