# QBO Onboarding Step 3: Add account numbers in QuickBooks Online

## Overview

By default, your*Chart of Accounts* in QuickBooks Online will not show account numbers. To turn on account numbers, use the following instructions.

## Things to know

- The account numbers you choose will affect how accounts are listed in your *Chart of Accounts*.
- Accounts are listed numerically (or alphabetically if account numbers are not used).

## How to turn on account number viewing

1. Click the Gear icon > Company Settings.
2. Select Advanced > Chart of Accounts > Edit Icon.
3. Check *Enable Account Numbers* and *Use Account Number.* This setting provides all users with the ability to view and sort accounts numerically.
4. Click **Save** and then click **Done**.

## How to set account numbers

1. Click the Gear icon > Chart of Accounts.
2. Click the **Edit Icon**.
3. Enter a unique number for each account in the number column. This number can be up to 7 digits long.
4. Click **Save**.
